In today's post, we will dive into the world of seeds, and more specifically flaxseeds (also known as linseed) and hemp hearts, and how to store them. If there's one thing you should know about me, it's that I hate food waste, hence I started this mini blog series to help you minimize food waste in your kitchen. Everything can make a difference, even a tiny seed!
I'll be honest with you and confess that I wasn't eating any seeds before going vegan, but I have since discovered how beneficial and healthy they are, so there's no day that goes by without me eating some! If you are sceptical about them or unsure how to use them, I suggest starting small – adding 1-2 teaspoons to your porridge or overnight oats (find some recipes here) is a great start.
I am by no means a nutritionist or a health advisor, so I won't go into any detail about their health benefits, but all that information is readily available. Try them, see what you like, experiment with them, and enjoy the process!
Now, onto the storing part, as this is what I promised you, right? I store both my flaxseeds and hemp hearts in jars in the fridge to extend their shelf life and keep them fresh for longer. For flaxseeds, I go even further and grind them, as it is better for digestion, and whole flaxseeds might pass through your intestine undigested, which means you won't get all the benefits.
Whole flaxseeds will last over a year in the fridge, and ground flaxseed will last up to 3 months in the fridge. Hemp hearts in an airtight container or jar will last up to a year in your fridge.
I hope you found this blog post useful, Nat x
