How to store your cucumbers

Written on: April 2025

Hello, if you are new here, my name is Nat, and I'm passionate about helping you tackle the significant issue of food waste right in your own kitchen! Today's post focuses on a simple yet effective method to keep your cucumbers fresh and crunchy for up to 10 days.

Food waste is a global problem with far-reaching consequences. Not only does it represent a significant economic loss for households and businesses, but it also has a detrimental impact on our environment. When food ends up in landfills, it decomposes and releases methane, a potent greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change. Furthermore, the resources used to grow, transport, and produce that wasted food – water, energy, land – are also squandered.

The good news is that each of us can make a difference by adopting small, conscious changes in our daily routines. Reducing food waste in your kitchen is not only a way to save money but also a meaningful step towards a more sustainable lifestyle. By being more mindful about how we store our groceries, plan our meals, and utilize leftovers, we can collectively lessen our environmental footprint.

So, let's get started with a simple trick to extend the life of your cucumbers! To keep them crisp and delicious for longer, you will need some kitchen paper and a food bag. But first, the essential step: washing your cucumbers thoroughly under cool running water to remove any dirt or residue. Once they are clean, take a few sheets of kitchen paper and wrap them. Ensure the paper is snug around the cucumbers, but not so tight that it causes bruising. The slight moisture remaining on the cucumbers after washing will dampen the paper, and this subtle humidity will help maintain their freshness and prevent them from drying out.

Once wrapped, place them in a food bag. This extra layer of protection helps to regulate the moisture levels and prevent them from becoming too damp or too dry. Store the bag of wrapped cucumbers in the crisper drawer of your refrigerator.

Remember, each time you open the bag to take out a cucumber, make sure to re-wrap any remaining ones securely in the kitchen paper, after few days change the kitchen paper to a new slightly damp one. This small step will help maintain the optimal environment for keeping them fresh and crunchy for up to 10 days, allowing you to enjoy their crispness in salads, sandwiches, or as a healthy snack for longer and contributing to a less wasteful kitchen.
